History Resources for Teachers

TEACHER RESOURCES

The Milan Historical Museum is pleased to offer several Educational Programs with a curriculum in accordance with the State of Ohio Educational Guidelines. We also offer Visual Art Programs and a Specialized Canal Tour. A Canal History Packet and Student Activities may be used prior to and after your visit to the Milan History Museum.


EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS


Family Life in the 1850s

Students take place in hands-on investigations of a founding family of Milan. In small groups, the group examines Merry family artifacts, photos, records and documents to reveal the Merry family's means of livelihood and lifestyle.

Ohio Standards:

Grade 3 - history, economics, social studies skills and methods
Grade 4 -
social studies skills and methods
Grade 5 -
social studies skills and methods


Edison and the Light Bulb

Introduce students to the realm and power of inventions, and better understand their impact on people, society and culture.


Descriptive Writing of Historic Photos

Students will produce essays that test the merit of their description by asking students to match descriptions with historic photos.

National Standards:

Grades 4-8 - Language Arts


Science Class With Glass

Students will look at life in the past while learning about science. The glass collection is the foundation for studying the physical properties of materials and the principals of light and color.

Ohio Standards:

Kindergarten - physical science, scientific inquiry and ways of knowing
Grade 1 -
physical science, scientific inquiry and ways of knowing and
    history skills and methods

Grade 2 -
Science: scientific inquiry and ways of knowing
    History: peoples in societies, citizenship rights and responsibilities and

    social studies skills and methods


Transportation

Students make a timeline of transportation and find examples in museum.

Ohio Standards:

Grade 2 - History: chronology, geography, places and regions, obtaining information and thinking and organizing


Pictures of Place

Students examine photos that record the history of Milan--activites help gain an understanding of the history of Milan and the local community and how communities change over time.

National Standards:

SPECIALIZED CANAL TOUR

The Milan Canal

Experience the Canal first hand with an interactive tour focusing on the history of the Milan Canal, its economic impact on the area and the causes for its decline. Students have the opportunity to build their own wooden schooner! Activities include historic Milan maps, word searches and timelines.
