The design of the Newton Arts Building portico was based upon the Jonathan Goldsmith front doorway of the Isaac Gillet House which is now part of the collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art (see first photo).
Jonathan Goldsmith (1783-1847), was a master builder active in the Western Reserve between 1819-43. He was born in Milford, Conn., the son of Jonathan Gillett and Anna (Beers) Goldsmith. After a brief apprenticeship as a shoemaker, he apprenticed himself to a carpenter-joiner at age 17. He worked in Hebron, Conn., and Berkshire County, Mass., before moving to Ohio in 1811. Goldsmith's known buildings include 30 homes and commercial buildings in Painesville, another handful around Lake County, and 10 houses in Cleveland. All were executed in the current late Federal and early Greek Revival styles. His drawings were included in the Metropolitan Museum's exhibition "The Greek Revival in the United States" in 1943.
Phase II of the Galpin Renovation Project is now complete! Come and view the new Folk Art Exhibit.
Renovations upgraded the spaces which house the Milan Canal exhibit, Milan Settlement exhibit and the new Western Reserve Folk Art gallery.
Several large grants have been received to help fund this ongoing project. The Verizon Foundation provided a generous grant to fund the purchase of state-of-the- art audio equipment to help better educate our visitors.
Other areas still under renovation include all galleries located on the second floor. Donations are gratefully accepted to help fund the completion of this project.
