Only the wealthy could afford to have their portrait painted.  Silhouettes were popular because they were less expensive & the profile was easy to recognize.  Follow the instructions to see how well you master the art of silhouette.

What you will need:

Blank wall
Straight-back chair
Spotlight
Black and white construction paper
Tape
Pencil
Scissors
Glue
Helper

Directions:

1. Sit in chair with your side next to the wall
2. Have your helper darken the room and shine the light on you so that there is a shadow
3. Place a sheet of paper on the wall so that your profile shines on the paper.  Tape into place
4. Have your helper trace your outline on the white paper
5. Switch places so that you trace your helpers profile
6. Cut out the profiles, then tape them onto the black paper
7. Cut out the black profile
8. Center the black silhouettes onto a second sheet of white paper.
9. Enjoy!
